WERRIBEE and Point Cook residents are shopping on their mobile phones more than anyone else in Australia, a new survey has revealed.
According to eBay Australia’s annual mobile shopping study, which is conducted independently by Nielson and Stokes Mischewski, postcode 3030 is the number one area for mobile shopping.
Hoppers Crossing was ranked fourth in Australia, just below Cranbourne in Melbourne’s South East, the only other Victorian suburb in the top five.
Spokesperson for eBay Meg English told Star the results were a shock even to the world’s largest online shopping website.
“We learned a lot doing this study and a lot of the places we thought would be higher on the list were not,” Ms English said.
“It’s really hard to say why an area would be so high up on the list. It could be people’s work hours define when they can shop and we do know that a lot of people that are shopping on mobiles are very value conscious.”
According to the results of the study, the most common items bought using mobile phones in Werribee and Point Cook are phone cases and covers, dresses, DVDs, video games, and phone screen protectors.
The average buyer age was 33-years-old and the peak shopping time was 8pm-9pm.
The average buyer age in Hoppers Crossing was 32.
Wyndham Mayor Heather Marcus said she was disappointed that residents were going online instead of supporting local businesses.
“I’m a little bit shocked and a bit sad to hear those results because we have just about everything residents could possibly want in Wyndham,” Cr Marcus said.
“I understand that shopping online is convenient but I don’t do it because I want jobs and money to stay in Wyndham.
“Residents should give our local retailers a go because there are such fantastic benefits from shopping locally.”
