A YARRAVILLE family of four was lucky to escape from their burning house on Monday morning in a blaze that has caused around $150,000 damage.
Eight fire units were sent out to the Lennox St home just after midnight when a fire thought to have originated from the garage or shed spread to the house. Metropolitan Fire Brigade Western Zone Operations Commander David Bruce said the fire could have been fatal if the family’s mother hadn’t noticed the flames. He said the bedroom of the family’s two primary school-aged children was destroyed.
“Fortunately it appears that the mother – the wife – was awake, and the power went off in the house, so she went to investigate and luckily she was able to wake the husband and get the kids out of the back bedroom, which in the end was destroyed.” by the fire,” he said.
“The fire was quite intense, it was seen from quite a distance away from responding crews.”
Fire crews had the blaze under control within 15 minutes.
The cause of the fire was still being investigated at the time Star went to print.
