AN INNOVATIVE community-based idea, Wyndham’s first community garden, it starting to branch out.
The Werribee Environmental Community Park is inviting residents interested in growing their own fresh produce to attend an expression of interest open day.
WECP President Bob Fairclough said he was excited about this next step in the establishment of the community garden, a project that had been in planning for several years.
“The agreement to establish the garden was recently finalised between the WECP committee and Werribee-based disability services provider Mambourin Enterprises,” Mr Fairclough said.
“There’s been an extraordinary combined effort by three of our local service clubs and members of the WECP committee to remove all weeds, overgrown plants and trees from the site.
“This has significantly advanced the project, allowing us to get interested residents in to view the garden much sooner than expected,” he said.
Mr Fairclough said the garden was an important way to bring the community closer together.
“There are a lot of renters who aren’t allowed to build a garden and sometimes people just haven’t got enough room in their backyard,” he said.
“This will give everybody an opportunity to interact and we will also be teaching sustainable living and gardening.”
The open day will be held on 25 February at the garden, located behind Ison House in Recreational Close in Werribee.
