Council to get shake-up

WYNDHAM may gain another two councillors following a recommendation by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
The VEC released a preliminary report last week outlining three possible options for the future of council representation in Wyndham.
The VEC presented the three options to the public for consideration last week.
The VEC’s first and preferred option stated that Wyndham should continue to have three wards but two of them, Chaffey and Truganina, should gain an extra councillor each.
They have also recommended that the boundaries should be moved so that Tarneit falls into the Chaffey ward. Currently it is split between two wards.
One of the biggest changes would be the renaming of the Truganina ward to Aircraft, which the VEC said was to pay homage to the presence of the airfield bases in the area.
Two other options have also been tabled, both maintaining the current number of councillors.
Bro Sheffield-Brotherton from the Wyndham Greens originally suggested that Wyndham should go from nine to at least 11 councillors.
Mr Sheffield-Brotherton said he was happy the VEC had listened to his proposals.
“I certainly think their preferred approach is a good one,” Mr Sheffield-Brotherton said.
“I think the outer metropolitan municipalities are the most difficult areas to provide for and I think the population has grown enough to allow for more councillors.”
Both councillors Heather Marcus and Deputy Mayor Glenn Goodfellow said they would support the move to 11 councillors if that is what the community wanted.
No other councillors could be contacted last week.
