AN OLD tree is branching out in a new direction, thanks to Parks Victoria and Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Last week, staff from Parks Victoria removed an enormous, dead tree from the mansion’s grounds.
As part of ‘Operation Big Tree’, the historic oak will be used by the zoo, as part of a new exhibit which they are planning.
Parks Victoria ranger Adam Smith said the tree, which weighed eight and a half tonnes, was aged around 140 years old.
Werribee Open Range Zoo’s director Sally Lewis said the tree would become part of ‘The Australian Grasslands Journey’ display.
“In the early stages of the development, visitors will explore the wonders of these ecosystems through engaging interactive experiences including a nocturnal display of our much loved, local and highly endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot,” she said.
