THE Werribee Hockey Club finally enjoyed a double win over the weekend within its senior ranks.
Both the men’s and women’s teams were successful on the road on Saturday, but it was the men who desperately craved victory.
The Tigers travelled to Monash University in search of their first win after two draws and two losses to start the season, and managed to come away with the spoils 3-1.
“We were going in pretty confident because they haven’t won a game,” skipper Ross Cowlishaw said afterward.
“There was a bit of passion as well because it was Cam’s (coach Cam Whyatt) old club from last year, so we had a few insights and knew we had to put them under the pump.”
The Tigers enjoyed a good start but did have to fight for the final result.
“We we’re up 2-0 at half time, and in the second half they came out firing and we were defending for probably the first 10 minutes,” Cowlishaw said.
“But then once we settled them down they ran out of legs, and we’re a pretty fit side compared to them, so we just ran over the top in the last 10 minutes.”
Josh Pace and Matthew Skoglund were among the scorers for Werribee while Cowlishaw named Andrew Purcell, Daniel Collins and Skoglund as the Tigers’ best.
The significance of getting that first elusive win wasn’t lost on the Werribee captain, either.
“It was good to finally get that win on the board,” he said.
“I know we’ve played the top half of the ladder so far this year, but it was good to get the ball rolling.”
Despite their winless opening month, Cowlishaw was buoyant in his assessment of Werribee’s Vic League One campaign to date.
“I think we’re doing really well,” he said.
“We got promoted so we thought we were going to struggle, but we’ve competed really well with the top sides.”
Meanwhile Werribee’s women enjoyed an easy 11-0 thumping of Frankston. Laura Baker and Cat Gladman were the best-performed Tigers on the field.
