IN THE balloon business, it is not a lot of hot air to say Brendan Ord makes mind-blowing creations.
The Hoppers Crossing resident can boast of being a balloon twister, modeller and artist.
Known as ‘Mr Balloon Man’, Mr Ord’s designs have seen him become known as Melbourne’s premier balloon twister.
“I love seeing people’s reactions, they love to watch the speed of my hands,” Mr Ord said.
The pouch he wears while sculpting balloon creations can hold up to 3000 unblown-up balloons.
Working at Balloons by Design in Hoppers Crossing, he appears at shopping centres, family fun day events, Christmas parades, Bat mitzvahs, hen’s nights, birthdays and even on television.
Mr Ord is also a member of the Balloon Artists Suppliers Association of Australia and acts as their ‘twisting instructor’ in Melbourne.
“I’m very passionate about pushing my talent and abilities to further heights in the industry,” he said.
“I love to make large-scale sculptures like life-size Ferris wheels, motorbikes and carousels but at an average gig I love to make aliens, mermaids and cartoon characters.”
Mr Ord has even made a life-size dinosaur skeleton after being commissioned to do so by the Church of Scientology.
“Anybody can do it with a little practice, and we can actually make anything out of balloons given enough time,” he said.
Mr Ord said his favourite part of balloon-twisting was “making the kids happy”.
“Their smiles keep me in the game,” he said.
