THE summer holidays is the perfect time to get stuck into a good book – and by doing just that, young people in Wyndham can win prizes.

There are two Summer Reading Club Programs being run by Wyndham Council on offer, a junior club for those aged between five to12 years and one for young people aged between 12 and 18.

Wyndham mayor Heather Marcus said the summer reading clubs are a perfect way for children and teenagers to develop a love of reading.

“Junior members pick up a reading log and for every five books they read, they collect a small prize. After reading 10 books, they go into the draw to win an iPod Touch,” Cr Marcus said.

“They can also attend one of the summer read parties at the Plaza, Point Cook, Werribee and Wyndham Vale libraries on Wednesday, 23 January from 2pm to 4pm, where they can dress up as their favourite book character, enjoy a magic show or make their own Angry Birds.”

After reading 10 books, those who take part in the Youth Summer Reading Club go into the draw to win a $250 Werribee Plaza Shopping Centre voucher.

“In 2012, Wyndham City Libraries signed up almost 11,000 new members to bring its total number of members to 62,250, checked out 1.7 million items, added eBooks and eAudiobooks to its collection and commenced a service which enables vision impaired customers to borrow eAudiobooks,” Cr Marcus said.
