Dogs fall short in run chase

FOOTSCRAY Edgewater did not quite have enough weaponry to outgun a star-studded Melbourne outfit in round 15 of the Premier Cricket competition on Saturday. The Dogs were just seven runs behind at the 20-over mark of the split-innings fixture at Merv Hughes Oval, but a misfiring bowling attack combined with a lacklustre batting display from the top order proved their downfall. In the finish Footscray Edgewater (159) fell 34 runs short of the target set by Melbourne (8/193). The Dogs were 4/68 at the break, with Dean Russ, Ben Green, Nicholas Oldridge (right) and Travis Dean all back in the pavilion. When their innings resumed, skipper Travis Gloury (56) and young wicketkeeper-batsman Dylan Kight (35) set about rescuing a sinking ship. The pair produced a 76-run stand for the fifth wicket. But after Kight departed, wickets tumbled as Victorian batsman Brad Hodge destroyed the Dogs’ lower order with his off spin. Brad Robertson was the best of Footscray Edgewater’s bowlers, claiming 4/56 from 12 overs. He was ably supported by Michael Kelliher (2/44), who claimed the prized scalp of Hodge (0). 59832 FOOTSCRAY Edgewater did not quite have enough weaponry to outgun a star-studded Melbourne outfit in round 15 of the Premier Cricket competition on Saturday.
