Skills that thrill

SPORTWEST VCAL students have been evaluating the risks of having fun in a unique hands-on approach.
Students have visited Calder Raceway, the Williamstown Water Police and Fun City (pictured) to assess participant risks and public liability in activities such as off-street drag racing, laser tag, jet skiing and go-carting.
SportWest VCAL, a joint initiative between Victoria University and the Western Bulldogs, is aimed at sporty Year 11 students in the West as an alternative to traditional VCE.
The program, which started last year, gives Year 11 students an intermediate VCAL and a Certificate II in Sports and Recreation, and in Year 12, a senior VCAL and a Certificate III in Sport and Recreation.
The program includes lots of hands-on projects, many based at the Whitten Oval and involving the Western Bulldogs.
“We take what can be dry information and make it practical and meaningful by letting the students evaluate and reflect on the public risks in the more dangerous recreational sporting environments,” SportWest VCAL project manager Carole Demirdjian said.
