CONFUSION still surrounds what Wyndham’s newest suburb will be called with Premier Dennis Napthine vetoing the apparent final choice.
Dr Napthine was in Werribee last week to announce that the East Werribee Employment Precinct had been given the green light and to unveil the East Werribee Precinct Structure Plan.
The plan was developed by the Growth Areas Authority for the State Government and will essentially act as a blueprint for the development.
Dr Napthine said the new suburb would generate more than 58,000 jobs and provide space for 7000 more homes.
At five times the size of the Melbourne CBD and Docklands combined, the land is currently worth between $300-$400 million.
While it was billed as “an absolutely exciting and historic day” for Wyndham, only one new detail was revealed, and that was by accident.
Director of Economic Planning and Development at the GAA, Paul Byrne, said during a lecture hosted by Dr Napthine in Werribee that the name would be East Werribee and different areas within the suburb would be given different names.
This was quickly corrected by the Premier, however, who said a better name needed to be found.
“I think East Werribee describes the area well but I think perhaps we could use a little bit more innovation and imagination and I’ve asked the Minister for Planning to look at the options for a more innovative name that reflects the history of this area and gives a sense of excitement and opportunity that this area deserves,” Dr Napthine said.
“I think there is a long history of people in this area who have given great service to the community of Werribee … who may be looked at in respect to whether we find some name through that process.”
Wyndham Council has previously supported a name with Werribee in it, preferably East Werribee or Werribee East so that the new suburb ties in with the Werribee CBD.
