WERRIBEE overcame a spirited Collingwood outfit to secure its second win of the Victorian Football League season on Saturday night. The Tigers were wasteful in front of goal early in the contest, going into quarter time, trailing by one point, despite having an extra four scoring shots during the term.
However, the longer the match went on, the more comfortable the Werribee players looked both inside attacking 50 and around the ground.
There was no shaking the Magpies on the scoreboard though, with Collingwood led by AFL-listed players Paul Seedsman and Jarrod Witts around the ground while Alan Didak and Jackson Paine looked dangerous up forward.
Ahead by four points at three quarter time, Werribee doubled its lead in the final term to run out eight-point winners, 12.14 (86) to 11.12 (78).
Will Sierakowski was a standout on the Tigers forward line, and was the leading goal scorer on the ground with three.
Other multiple goal kickers for Werribee included Ben Warren and Mason Wood while Majak Daw also booted one.
Around the ground, Ayden Kennedy was named best on ground, while former Sydney Swan Jarred Moore was also solid.
From his three games this year, Moore has been named in the best players on each occasion as he settles into his new club.
The victory sees Werribee move to a 2-1 win/loss record for the 2013 season, with the club’s other win coming against Port Melbourne a fortnight ago.
This week, the Tigers will meet Williamstown in what is looming as a blockbuster clash between two of the competition’s premiership favourites.
After two cracking games between the pair in 2012, Williamstown head coach Peter German is expecting more of the same when the ball in bounced.
“Werribee and Williamstown games are always great contests, and if all goes well, like the last couple of years when we have played them, the game has been on a knife’s edge,” German said.
“I wouldn’t see anything being really different, when we play them next week.”
