WERRIBEE ignited its VFL top four chances with an impressive 56-point win against Casey. The Tigers recovered from a slow start to the match before a 10-goal second quarter all but sealed the win.
Casey continued to fight on and did manage to close the margin, but it wasn’t enough to overthrow the imposing Tigers.
The victory was even more impressive given the club’s short turnaround from its Foxtel Cup semi-final in Perth five days earlier.
Werribee coach Scott West praised forward Addam Maric after the game, with the former AFL player kicking five goals.
“This is his first year out of the full time environment,” West said.
“I’ve got a bit of a theory that it takes a little bit of time to adjust to working, training after hours at 5.30 … getting used to team mates.
“He’s been good, he only needs five, six, seven, eight possessions to really be damaging. He kicked five and set a couple up, he was terrific today.”
Majak Daw and Scott Clouston were also solid contributors in the Tigers’ win. The result sees Werribee move into fifth spot on the VFL ladder, with eight wins and five losses for the season.
West said he was impressed with the way his side had come together in the lead up to finals, with competition for places in the senior team heating up.
“It takes a little bit of time for our boys to get used to playing together in that style,” he said.
“Players coming back, and having multiple changes most weeks … you never have a really settled team.
“From a VFL point of view, probably Bolton, Keras and Hicks … all these guys are really tapping on the door. Will Sullivan and Darcy Fort are really knocking on the door to play VFL footy – it’s good to have that competition.”
When round 14 of the VFL season gets underway this week, Werribee will take on the struggling Coburg.
