A WERRIBEE university student with a passion for giving back to the community will be packing her bags soon to volunteer in a whole new continent.
Kristy Hannath from Werribee has signed for a once in a lifetime trip to South Africa, where she will teach local school children physical education and help to build schools and playgrounds.
The 20-year-old will spend four weeks in Africa’s ninth largest country, with three weeks dedicated just to volunteering.
Ms Hannath said she was looking forward to the experience.
“I’m excited at the moment but I’m sure I’ll become a bit more nervous when it gets a bit closer,” Ms Hannath said.
“It’s something that really appealed to me so I just went straight for it.”
Ms Hannath has previously volunteered at an aged care facility in Werribee where she helped bring some joy to elderly people’s lives.
She is now studying exercise and sports science at Deakin University and said she was looking forward to introducing the love of sport to children in South Africa.
“I’m a very outdoors kind of person so I’m really looking forward to it.”
Ms Hannath is now looking for other Wyndham residents that are willing to sponsor her dream.
She needs about $6000 to complete her volunteering trip, which will take place next January.
