Rabbit baiting to begin

FERAL rabbits are in for a shock this month as Wyndham Council begins its rabbit baiting program.
The council will continue the program in an effort to control the environmental damage caused by the notorious pest until 17 December this year.
The program involves mixing small pieces of carrots with a poison called Pindone.
The baits will be laid by a Department of Primary Industries licensed contractor along trails where rabbits have been spotted.
Wyndham mayor Heather Marcus said rabbits can have a significant impact on the environment by preventing the growth of native vegetation.
“Rabbits contribute to soil erosion, displace native mammal species and can greatly contribute to weed establishment and invasion due to their selective grazing of desirable species,” Cr Marcus said.
“During the baiting program the City recommends that residents keep their pets away from the treated areas.
Deceased rabbits may pose a very minimal secondary poisoning risk to roaming pets, therefore caution is advised during the baiting period.
Warning signs will be placed at treatment areas before the commencement of the program.
