NOT many 18-year-olds would admit they are excited about studying but for one talented Werribee teenager that is exactly what she is looking forward to in the New Year.
Kirsty Olive from Werribee finished 2011 as the dux at MacKillop College and has spent the last three years creating her ideal future as a neurosurgeon.
The bright bookworm has been guaranteed a place at Melbourne University since Year 10 when she was selected to be a part of the university’s Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars program.
Next month she will start a degree in Biomedicine which she hopes to use as a pathway to study her doctorate at the prestigious university.
Kirsty said she was not expecting to receive the highest VCE score at MacKillop and suggested students entering Year 12 this year should take a deep breath.
“I knew my score would be high but I didn’t expect to be dux,” Kirsty said.
“I would say that other students shouldn’t stress. Don’t dwell on what you can’t change.”
While most 18-year-olds might be dreading the thought of embarking on obtaining a degree, Kirsty said she could not wait to hit the books again.
“It sounds sad, but I’m looking forward to doing more study,” she said.
“I’ve always liked maths and science. I like formulas and stuff like that.”
