ST ALBANS traders are concerned for their safety and are calling for 24-hour security cameras to help curb violence.
Businesses in the popular Alfrieda St and Main Rd East precinct say high levels of crime have led to increased fear among shoppers and business owners.
Their concern followed a public rally in Sunshine on Friday when hundreds of Brimbank residents called for increased police numbers. Residents claim they had been neglected by the State Government and police command.
St Albans traders said they were concerned by what they believed was a sharp increase in robberies and assaults.
But Keilor Downs Senior Sergeant Wayne Moed said there had been no spike in the crime statistics.
“I’ve looked at the crime stats and what I’d say is that there’s not an obvious increase in crime within that area,” Sen Sgt Moed said.
“We understand there may be a perception of increased concern but it’s certainly not reflected in our statistics.”
Sen Sgt Moed said police were committed to reducing fear among the local community.
“It’s important to us what the perception is and we’re very keen to increase foot patrols and bicycle patrols within the St Albans business district, resources permitting,” he said.
St Albans Business Group chairman Sam Agrigola said he had met with other traders in the area with concerns about assaults and robberies in St Albans.
“I am concerned for the safety of people, in particular my female staff members. They’re quite young and I am concerned about them when they’re walking to their cars in the dark after work,” Mr Agrigola said.
“I am concerned about business in the area. If the area ends up with a perception of being unsafe, people won’t come here.”
Mr Agrigola said even if statistics didn’t reflect an increase in crime, there was definitely an “increased perception” in St Albans.
Star contacted Safeway/Woolworths in Main Rd East regarding suggestions the store was closing early due to crime concerns. However a company spokesman denied the assertions and said the change in hours was “just one of those things”.
