BIKE riders in the West will benefit from a planned cycling track that will run from Footscray to Sunshine.
The track, a joint venture between Maribyrnong City Council and the Department of Transport, hopes to meet the demand for sustainable transport alternatives.
The council concept plan, ‘Crossing the Street’ also aims to reduce pollution and improve the health of the local community by providing a safe means of exercise. The council engaged consultants from August to December 2008 to help carry out a consultative study that would determine the best route for the path.
Maribyrnong mayor Michael Clarke said members of the cycling community were consulted in addition to VicRoads, VicTrack, Brimbank City Council, Bicycle Victoria, and local bike rider groups to ensure the bike path met the needs of all potential users.
“This bike path will also help put us on track to achieving our goal of becoming a carbon neutral community by 2020,” said Cr Clarke.
Maribyrnong council has begun work on the next phase of the streetscape improvement project with detailed designs of the shared path in West Footscray’s Cross and Rupert streets.
