Give carbon the Earth flick

By Charlene Gatt
MARIBYRNONG City Council is calling on businesses and residents to switch off lights and unnecessary electrical appliances as part of the world-wide Earth Hour campaign later this month.
“Global warming is one of the most pressing issues of our time,” mayor Michael Clarke said.
“By taking part in Earth Hour we are able to send a strong symbolic message that it’s possible to take real action to combat climate change.”
“We encourage everyone to get on board with this important event – it’s as easy as a flick of the switch.”
Restaurants in the municipality that are keen to pitch in should register their interest with the council, which will promote their involvement on the council’s website.
Maribyrnong’s participation is an extension of the Carbon Neutral Action Plan that was passed last year.
The council has vowed to become carbon neutral as an organisation by 2015 and as a municipality by 2020.
Anyone who wishes to flick a switch can do so during Earth Hour on Saturday 28 March between 8.30-9.30pm.
