FRUSTRATED Hoppers Crossing residents who have been driven around the bend have pushed the council to take action on a dangerous stretch of road.
More than 70 people signed a petition three weeks ago for stop signs to be erected between the Civic Centre and 51 Powell Drive.
The petition has prompted Wyndham City Council to carry out a survey to determine the need for the signs.
One of the petition’s organiser, who asked not to be named, said that section of the road was an accident waiting to happen.
“There are many aged residents in this area who go on a different route to get out of the area because of a fear of an accident,” she said.
“I had a difficult situation when I met a big universal truck on the corner and had to edge around it to get by.”
She said the road clocked up a lot of traffic and hoon drivers were proving to be a weekly menace.
“Powell Drive is quite busy and if it gets blocked off there is only one lane so it gets a bit tricky,” she said.
The petition states that vision around the bend is restricted by cars parked in the street by train commuters. As a result there have been several near misses between cars and trucks.
“People on the trains have insufficient parking space so they park in our local street to be as close to the station as they can,” the petitioner said.
Stop signs were present before road works occurred a few years ago.
Wyndham City councillors voted to receive the petition at their meeting on Tuesday 10 March.
The council will undertake site inspections, observations and a survey of parking activity and produce a detailed report which will be submitted to councillors at the council meeting on 6 April.
