Artist turned curator

THE tables have turned for Katherine Dine.
Used to submitting her work for consideration, now the Truganina artist has turned curator as part of the Footscray Community Art Centre’s Young Curator Program.
Ms Dine is one of seven aspiring curators to do the program.
“I’ve always been kind of curious about the whole process,” she said.
The program gives participants the opportunity to collectively curate an annual line-up of exhibitions and events for the Basement Lounge at the Footscray Community Arts Centre.
Ms Dine will also have the chance to make connections with professional curators in a series of events.
She is also interested in arts administration and runs a program called Street SmART in Hobsons Bay that hosts free street art workshops for young people.
“For the last two years, I’ve been moving away from making art myself – I still do, but it’s not the main part of what I do.
“I always thought it would be cool to bring artists together and give them opportunities to make art.”
Ms Dine hopes the Young Curators Program will bring her one step closer to opening her own art gallery one day.
“My husband has always wanted to have a café, so I’d love to do a café/gallery kind of thing, and then we could work together.”
The first exhibition in the series will open on 27 May.
