THESE women are keeping it real.
Fourteen young Sudanese women have just put out a hip hop music video online after completing the two-week Culture Shack workshop with international hip hop star Nantali Indongo from rap group Nomadic Massive.
The song, Keeping it Real, is about growing up and making the right life choices.
The women wrote the song collaboratively and recorded it at Kindred Studios in Footscray.
Artists from all over the globe, including Brett Reynolds from Young Playwrights Inc in New York, local social enterprise Youthworx Media and Ms Indongo, ran workshops over April to encourage youths from refugee and multicultural backgrounds to get into further education.
Culture Shack project director Dr Anne Harris said many of the people who attended the workshops will be working towards a Certificate III in Creative Industries.
“The Sudanese community in Melbourne I achieving great things, collectively and individually,” Dr Harris said.
“These young people are tomorrow’s leaders. They are putting Footscray on the map and enriching Melbourne’s cultural and educational capital. And now they are being recognised internationally, by artists like Nantali.
“VU boasts high enrolments of African students, an achievement of which we are proud.”
