THE next big name in pop music hails from Hoppers Crossing and grew up performing shows at local shopping centres.
Arlene Zelina, a singer-songwriter from Hoppers Crossing has just become the first Australian to be signed to multi-platinum award winning singer Jason Derulo’s record label Future History.
The 22-year-old was performing in Los Angeles when Derulo stopped by to see her for himself.
“Jason came out to watch me at one of my shows in LA, and I didn’t actually know he was there until I heard from his people later that he wanted to sign me,” Ms Zelina told Star.
“I’m an Australian in LA and I didn’t even think that kind of thing could happen to you.
“I guess I was pretty lucky that I didn’t know he was there otherwise I would have been too nervous and I probably would have jumped off the stage.”
The two are now working together on Arlene’s debut album, and former Derrimut Heath Primary School student said she had big plans for her future.
“It’s crazy. I never thought a girl from Hoppers Crossing could make on this kind of stage,” she said.
“I need to perform at Rod Laver Arena one day. I’d love to go on the Ellen Show and meet Beyonce. It sounds crazy but if I just put it out there then it might happen.
Jason Derulo said in a statement that Arlene had one of the best voices he had ever heard.
“I’ve travelled the world and had the pleasure of seeing all types of artists, but upon seeing Arlene I was mesmerised by her talent, stage presence and vocal ability,” Derulo said.
“I think she has an incredible career ahead of her and we are thrilled that she is a part of Future History.”
Arlene described her music as pop oriented with RnB and soul undertones.
A youtube video of her performing a cover of the song Moves Like Jagger has already garnered more than 10 million views.
