WYNDHAM is home to a sporting club that has won 13 of the last 14 national championships, yet most people would probably not have even heard of them.
The Werribee DrillDance Club, previously known as the Werribee Marching Club, is considered the club to beat on the national stage.
They recently sent several teams to the national championships in Adelaide where they once again brought home a first place trophy in the under 12 freestyle competition.
They also took out second and third in two traditional marching categories.
Despite their success, the Werribee DrillDance Club is short on members and are looking for women and girls of any age to give their unique sport a try.
The change of name is one way they hope to attract more members.
“A national survey found the word marching gave an old-fashioned and negative impression so we needed to find a better way to communicate what we do,” club President Julie Melbourne said.
The club has been in Werribee for almost 60 years and recruitment officer Tennille Harbison said there were lots of skills to be gained through competitive marching.
“It teaches discipline and working together as a team. It’s a very team oriented sport,” Ms Harbison said.
“It’s also great for building friendships. We’re like one big family.”
The club is holding a come and try day on 21 July. For more information call Margaret McKenzie on 9742 3398.
