EPA on watch

By Charlene Gatt
THE Environment Protection Authority has announced a crackdown on errant construction companies who fail to manage sediment run-off from building sites.
The EPA’s North-West manager Tim Eaton said the issue was prevalent at many construction sites, school upgrades and subdivisions. Mr Eaton said most companies understood their responsibilities, but failed to act because it required time and money.
“An increased presence by the EPA will hopefully encourage the construction industry to take the issue a little more seriously,” he said.
The EPA can issue errant companies with a notice requiring them to cease run-off by a certain time. A failure to comply with the notice conditions may result in a $5841 fine. Local councils are also able to issue notices, which can remain on the occupier for three years, along with $200 on-the-spot fines.
