AUSTRALIA’s biggest community participation event is around the corner with schools, businesses and community groups all over Wyndham joining together to Clean Up the municipality.
Clean Up Australia Day is a day when communities across Australia are encouraged to join forces and clean up local sites like streets, parks, sporting grounds, beaches and waterways.
Point Cook Kindergarten has registered again this year, with the youngsters already out in full force to clean up their surrounding premises.
Teacher Laura Chitera said the children were very enthusiastic to be involved and enjoyed learning about the environment.
“I want to teach the children about environmental sustainability and what happens to litter when it goes down the drain,” Ms Chitera said.
In the lead up to Clean Up Australia Day the children will engage in a range of activities and book readings teaching them about the negative effects of litter, especially to marine life, and why it’s important to keep Australia beautiful.
Ms Chitera said the children were learning not to be ‘litter bugs’ and slogans like ‘do the right thing and put it in the bin.’
“I think it’s extremely important to understand and care about the environment from a young age,” she said.
“So when they are older they understand not to throw litter and to care for the environment.”
In 2013 more than 550,300 volunteers across 7,341 sites removed an estimated 16,150 tonnes of rubbish.
Registrations for 2014 Clean Up sites are now open, to register go to cleanupaustraliaday.org.au
