A 24-YEAR-old Hoppers Crossing man has been charged by police after he was caught hooning down the main street of Werribee.
A video showing the man performing donuts before travelling along Watton St with a large cloud of smoke following him was uploaded to social media last week.
The maroon Holden sedan also had its number plates removed in the video.
Senior Sergeant Damien Madden from the Wyndham Highway Patrol said the incident occurred on Thursday 6 Feb at around 10.45pm and the driver was caught a short time later.
Police Inspector Damien Christensen was in the area when he noticed the smoke cloud and called his team members to investigate.
“To perform these kinds of burnouts on a busy street with other people in the area is obviously extremely dangerous,” Sen Sgt Madden said.
The man was charged with conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, criminal damage, driving in a manner dangerous, careless driving and driving an unregistered vehicle.
Sen Sgt Madden said police did not believe it was the driver’s car. He was bailed to appear before the Werribee Magistrate’s Court on 14 May.
Vice President of Road Trauma Families Victoria and Werribee resident, Lisa Markovic, said the actions of the hoon were “brazen” and dangerous.
Ms Markovic’s brother Daniel was killed in a car accident involving a car being driven by a man affected by drugs.
Ms Markovic said she was angered by the behaviour shown in the video, especially after her brother’s death.
“It’s totally senseless behaviour and they don’t understand the potential damage they could cause, not just to themselves but to other innocent people,” Ms Markovic said.
“It’s a really selfish act and they’re not considering the law at all.”
