WILLIAMSTOWN secured its sixth win of the Victorian Football League competition season on Sunday with a 56-point victory over Essendon. The Seagulls didn’t have things all their own way and were forced to fight hard during a tough first quarter.
Essendon kicked four opening-term goals to take a five-point lead into the break.
However, from there it was all Williamstown as the Seagulls began to dominate the contest.
Williamstown kicked three goals in the second quarter and was then able to follow up with bags of five and four goals in the final two terms to run away victors.
The Bombers managed just two goals across the final three quarters to fall to the 15.11 (101) to 6.9 (45) loss.
Lachie Hunter was a standout for the Seagulls in the win, and pushed his name forward for a potential call up to AFL side the Western Bulldogs this week.
The former Western Jet kicked three goals and won a lot of the ball around the ground.
He was well supported by Brent Prismall, Daniel Cross and Leigh Masters who were also impressive in the win.
For Essendon, David Hille booted two goals while Nathan Lovett Murray kicked one.
Tom Bellchambers also put his name up for a senior recall as one of the club’s best performers.
The win sees Williamstown sit in fifth spot on the VFL ladder with a 9-3 win/loss record for the season.
In other VFL results, Collingwood defeated Coburg, Box Hill narrowly got over the line against Sandringham, Port Melbourne lost to North Ballarat and the Northern Blues beat Frankston.
When round 11 kicks off this week, Williamstown will take on the Northern Blues at Visy Park.
