Station not much cop now

Out of this world … The demolition of the old Footscray Police Station is underway. Picture: ARLENESACHON.DEMOLITION crews struck the first blow to the vacant Footscray Police Station last week.
It marks the start of longawaited upgrades to the Hyde St police station, which will be replaced by a twostorey contemporarystyled building.
But all will not be lost, as the adjoining, 69yearold Footscray courthouse will be incorporated into the new design.
The outside of the heritage building will remain untouched but the inside will be refurbished and will be used as a training room.
Police officers moved to a temporary site in Buckley St last month in anticipation of the redevelopment.
Senior Sergeant Bill Weatherly said the refurbishment could result in the Victoria Police’s regional response unit transferring to the new complex.
He said the sexual offence unit could also be based at the upgraded station.
“We’re happy to be in a temporary premises but we’ll be even happier to move to the new building,” Sen Sgt Weatherly said.
The new building is expected to be completed within 18 months.
