MARIBYRNONG Secondary College will host in July Melbourne’s biggest FReeZA hip hop dance party.
The party will include a dance-off for eight competing troupes from eight different schools across the West.
And the winner will receive a cash prize.
Council youth officer Tibor Gede said interest in hip hop was growing among young people.
“There are some who see hip hop on TV, but there are a lot more people in the City of Maribyrnong doing hip hop in their own way,” he said.
“Hip hop is about truth.
“For example if you are a rapper – where freestyling came from – it is like a stream of consciousness.
“You are pretty much through rap telling the story of where you come from, and just about expressing truth or ideas.”
Mr Gede said there were other elements of hip hop like dancing, graffiting and Djing.
“It’s about expressing your truth through those forms.”
The Maribyrnong City Council, Moonee Valley City Council and Multicultural Arts Victoria will jointly fund the $12,000 event.
DJs Jezroc, Nuke and Dee will spin hip hop and R and B music during the night.
Diafrix and Nubian Knights will give live, free-style rap performances and break-dancers the Polka Dot Crew and street artists Vjing Displays will also entertain.
FReeZA is a council run initiative that focuses on providing events for young people.
The dance party, titled New Scool Rulez, is open to all ages and will be free. Inquiries should be made to Tibor Dede 9688 0126.
