New Mercy centre

By VANESSA VALENZUELA
WORKS have commenced on the construction of a new rehabilitation centre and geriatric unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital.
The new facility, which will include a Community Rehabilitation Centre and Geriatric Evaluation Management Unit will be located at the front of the main building to provide a range of public health services to the community.
Executive Director of Mercy Public Hospitals Linda Mellors said the centre would bring aged, rehabilitation and disability care together under one roof.
“By placing the centre in front of the hospital we aim to improve access for people who do not require overnight stays for medical treatment,” Ms Mellors said.
Ms Mellors said every effort will be made to minimise the impact of building works on patients, neighbouring businesses and residents.
“There will be no disruption to regular health services,” she said.
“We have been in contact with council and our immediate neighbours in the lead up to this project. Construction will continue until October 2013 and the local community will be kept informed as it progresses.”
Tarneit MP Tim Pallas said the new facility would address the growing needs of the community.
“The population is growing as it is, and its services like these that are desperately needed in our community,” Mr Pallas said.
“It is not only important but it is imperative that we can continue to grow in the way we are by having new community facilities to match that grown.
“This is a small step in the right direction.”
Temporary fencing will change access to the hospital but there onsite signage and information sheets at key entrances will assist patients, visitors and employees.
