DARCY deserves all the attention she gets.
The seven-month-old American Staffordshire terrier is already ahead of the pack, taking out first prize in her category at the Royal Melbourne Show last week.
The brindle-coloured puppy caught the eye of judges and added another blue ribbon to owner Leanne Lancaster’s prize room.
Mrs Lancaster, from Brimbank, began breeding and showing Amstaffs (as the breed is affectionately known) eight years ago.
While the dogs cut an imposing figure – it’s a cousin of the English Staffordshire Bull Terrier – Darcy is just one of family.
“She’s great with kids,” Mrs Lancaster said, who has three young sons.
“I’ve never had a problem in all the time I’ve had them.”
Mrs Lancaster said the breed was loyal and friendly.
But she said Amstaffs needed responsible owners.
“I’m very particular about who I sell puppies to. I like to get to know the prospective owners.”
Mrs Lancaster said people interested in owning an American Staffordshire terrier should make sure they approach a registered breeder or contact the Victorian Canine Association.
