The lights were expected to be put in earlier this year but have been held up by inappropriate tenders.
Truganina councillor Bob Fairclough said after a meeting with Altona MP Lynne Kosky last Friday, that work on the lights is expected to start later this year.
He said they should be in by January 2007.
“We were a high-powered group of people and we received a very sympathetic hearing to our concerns,” he said.
The group included the mayors of both Hobsons Bay and Wyndham, Carl Marsich and Shane Bourke, Wyndham CEO Ian Robins, as well as representatives of the Point Cook Residents’ Association.
The local leaders also asked for lights to be placed at Dunnings and Point Cook roads.
That intersection has been the site of several crashes in recent months and the source of frustration for Point Cook residents.
A VicRoads report shows an upgrade to that intersection would involve partially duplicating sections of road and cost about $700,000.
Dunnings Rd carries about 7500 vehicles a day, and Point Cook Rd, nearly 14,000.
Mr Fairclough said Ms Kosky would raise the concerns about that intersection with other government officials.
Danger roads … Right: The intersection of Forsyth Rd and the Princes Freeway at Hoppers Crossing is to get lights at last.
