Healthy first for gathering

THE Gathering Place will run a specially-designed health program for the Aboriginal community over eight weeks, from 6 September.
The program was predominantly organised by Westgate Division of General Practice, and will address gender specific health issues.
Colleen Marion, Gathering Place chairperson, said topics like sexual health and well-being will be held for men and women, while specifically women talks will address well-being and other issues for the over-40s.
“This is the first program of its kind to be held in Australia,” Ms Marion said.
“It’s absolutely fantastic. We couldn’t have done it without our partnerships in the community.”
Aboriginal elder Aunty Viv Huston, 60, said users appreciated health initiatives run through the Gathering Place.
“A lot like going to the Gathering Place for their health. They give me check-ups for my diabetes, heart and grieving,” she said.
“I’m going though an early grieving. I sit and have a talk to my doctor, she listens and explains things to me. My brother is dying of cancer. I can’t help him no more.”
