Powerlines being checked

POWERCOR is this month undertaking comprehensive electricity checks in the St Albans area to help keep local power supplies in top condition.
Field crews will complete a major inspection of the high-voltage power lines that supply electricity to more than 5700 customers throughout St Albans, Delahey, Taylor’s Hill and the surrounding areas.
The works are part of Powercor’s annual routine maintenance program that inspects more than 600,000 power poles and associated electrical assets in central and western Victoria as well as Melbourne’s west and outer west.
Regional asset manager Glen Smith said inspectors from Powercor and contractor Electrix Pty Ltd would grade electrical equipment according to its condition.
“Any equipment which poses an immediate threat to the reliability of the local electricity network will be dealt with within 24 hours,” he said.
“Other equipment that is likely to fail within two years will be named as a second priority and will be attended to within 18 weeks.”
Mr Smith said that inspectors and construction crews might require access to power lines on private property in order to complete their work.
“Residents will be notified of any defects in private power lines, as well as details of how they are required to attend to them,” he said.
Mr Smith said that the electricity feeder inspections, like other important maintenance programs conducted by Powercor, were part of the business’s ongoing commitment to keep electricity services safe, reliable and adaptable.
“We have placed a much greater emphasis on improving reliability in recent years, especially in growing areas such as the western suburbs.”
