FOOTSCRAY North Primary School is ensuring the city will continue to be known for art by fostering the talent of tomorrow’s artists in the classroom.
The work of six Grade 5 and 6 students has been chosen for an exhibition at The Young at Art Gallery at the Victoria University in Melton.
The work has been included in the gallery’s new exhibition of artwork from school students in the West.
The exhibition, We Are, was officially opened last month.
Footscray North school teacher Dianna Polazzon said the artwork chosen for the exhibition was part of a unit on cartooning.
Ms Polazzon said the unit had a particular focus on portrait cartoons and looking at different ways to draw facial features.
The students’ artwork began with a series of sketches and then one sketch was chosen to be created into a coloured portrait.
Ms Polazzon said both the students and their parents were excited about seeing the work on display.
“We wanted to teach them that art is about expressing how we see things and displaying it somewhere so that people can see it.
“It’s not every day children are given the opportunity to display their work in a gallery situation,” she said.
The exhibition will also feature artwork by Melton and Exford students and will be open from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday.
