WYNDHAM pet lovers are being encouraged to open their hearts, and their purses, and give generously to help abandoned dogs this winter.
Susan Butler volunteers as a foster carer with Victorian Dog Rescue, taking in dogs and cats that are on death row in pounds and caring for them until they are ready to move permanently to a new home.
The Point Cook animal enthusiast said she loves being able to give man and woman’s best friend a second chance.
“There are so many dogs with nothing wrong with them but they just have nowhere to go,” Ms Butler said.
“It’s great to be able to show them the love they haven’t received.”
Trisha Taylor from Victorian Dog Rescue said the community foster care network relied on generous community support.
“We save animals that have been abandoned, and place them in foster care until they are adopted. We actively campaign for better conditions for domestic animals,” Ms Taylor said.
“We are a totally not-for-profit organisation and every cent we raise is used to feed and house the rescued animals and to pay our veterinary costs which can be prohibitive as our animals are treated the same as we would our own family dogs.”
For a $25 donation a dog or cat will be provided with a heat pad to keep them warm this winter and a bag of dry food to feed it for three weeks.
