CITY of Maribyrnong motorists with pre-1997 cars have two weeks left to get their vouchers for a free engine immobiliser.
Maribyrnong City Council has 53 vouchers left as part of Operation Bounce Back, a joint initiative between the council and the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council to promote car theft prevention.
The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council estimates victims of car theft are out of pocket $5000 paying for alternative transport, replacing the vehicle, loss of items in the car and disruption to work and social life.
“Being a victim of theft is costly, disruptive and invasive. Installing an engine immobiliser is the best protection against car theft as the only person with the specific car keys can start the car,” mayor Sel Sanli said.
A total 213 cars have been stolen from across the municipality between 1 January and 31 August this year, with the bulk of thefts occurring along Ballarat Rd in Maidstone and Raleigh St in Footscray.
So far, 66.2 per cent of the stolen cars have been recovered.
The voucher offer expires on 31 October. Call 9688 0182 to get your free voucher.
