Fight over childcare plans

By XAVIER SMERDON

A FORMER Deputy Mayor of Melton is taking on Wyndham Council and the developers of a Tarneit neighbourhood over plans to build a childcare centre and five shops behind her house.
Wendy Sullivan and her husband Stephen, along with their neighbours, are angry that the area immediately behind their house has been rezoned as commercial.
CEO of Wyndham Council, Kerry Thompson, said the council is currently considering an application for the development of a 130 place childcare centre, five convenience shops and associated parking on Maryann Way in Tarneit.
The Sullivan’s dead end street will also be extended to connect with a service road on Tarneit Road if the plans are approved.
“What we’re saying is that we believe the council haven’t got the provisions to allow something like that in the area without having an impact on the surrounding area,” Mr Sullivan said.
“If we had have known that the area would be zoned commercial we wouldn’t have bought here.”
So far 11 objections have been submitted to Wyndham Council.
“Among the concerns raised were the potential for the proposed development to increase traffic/parking congestion, adversely impact on road safety and create additional noise and potential disturbance to surrounding homes,” Ms Thompson said.
“The potential impact of the proposed development on the surrounding road network and residents will be considered as part of the assessment process. A traffic engineering assessment submitted by the applicant is under review.”
Ms Thompson said the council expected to make a decision early next year.
Mr Sullivan said he felt “duped” by the developers, Watersun Homes, and the fact that they had changed the plans for the area.
