THE memory of a Werribee father and husband who died in a tragic car accident last year has been honoured in a way that will benefit the entire community.
David Flowers, a member of the Werribee Park Golf Club, was killed while he was sitting in traffic when an airborne car slammed into the side of his car on Fitzgerald Rd in Laverton.
Last month, a year after Mr Flowers’ passing, his beloved golf club organised a raffle, with the proceeds going to the newly formed Werribee based road safety group, Road Trauma Victoria.
In total $1000 was given to the group, which Mr Flowers’ wife Lynette said was a great way to honour her husband.
“They organised it all without telling me and it was just a big surprise,” Ms Flowers said.
“It’s so fantastic that they wanted to do this in David’s memory.”
Since her husband’s passing Ms Flowers has become a staunch advocate for road safety and she said people needed to become more aware of the effect road trauma has on the community.
“Every day is still like day one for me,” she said.
“It’s not just the family that is affected, it creates an ongoing ripple effect throughout the whole community.
“People don’t understand the risks and they’re willing to take risks but they don’t realise that they are gambling with someone else’s life.”
Vice President of Road Trauma Victoria, Lisa Markovic, told Star the money would help the group in its early stages.
“We were absolutely thrilled when we were told they would be donating this money. It’s really going to help us get up on our feet,” Ms Markovic said.
“We’re Victorian based but we’re looking at focusing more on the western suburbs because obviously there is such an extreme need out here.
“We’ve got such a high number of hoons around Werribee and we want to be proactive, so we want to get in their first before there is another terrible accident.”
