Falcons strike to rain on North Sunshine’s return

NORTH Sunshine’s first match on return to the Western Region Football League Division Two competition was spoilt by Wyndhamvale on the weekend.
The Roadrunners scored just four goals for the match and were thrashed by 68 points.
Brett Cook bagged five goals for the Falcons, who dominated in the final three quarters after trailing narrowly at the first change.
At Robert Bruce Reserve, Deer Park and Albanvale played out an interesting first round clash, with the Lions getting the points after a last quarter burst. There was little between the two sides to the final change, but Deer Park finished with a flurry of goals to ensure a 31-point victory.
Michael Spatolisano was the only multiple goalkicker for the Cobras, while former Taylors Lakes recruits Steven Rizzo (three goals) and Michael Di Pietro (two) contributed five of the Lions’ 10 goals.
In another tight encounter, Sunshine Heights defeated North Footscray by 22 points.
The Heights led at every change, Robert Greto leading the goalkicking charge with four majors.
Last season’s grand finalist Glenorden picked up its first win of the new year over West Footscray by 50 points.
It was only inaccuracy which kept the margin from blowing out, with Glenorden conceding 20 fewer scoring shots for the afternoon.
The winners had six multiple goalkickers, with Christopher Stephens booting three.
Coburg Districts had to come from behind to record its first round win over Central Altona, eventually winning by 28 points.
Coburg was nine points in arrears at the final change before finishing full of running.
Braybrook began its season with a thumping victory over Brunswick Power, striding to the line by 141 points after a 25-goal blitz.
And Gladstone Park was equally impressive against the Western Magpies, winning by 106 points on the back of a seven-goal haul from Heath Shephard.
