WYNDHAM City councillors have approved a 16-lot development for the old Werribee Hospital site, despite earlier concerns about the design.
Councillor Henry Barlow persuaded the council last month to defer a decision on the project, saying it was the “same old, same old”.
The proposal returned last week to councillors was virtually in the same form.
Cr Barlow said the 1.3 hectare development was not the kind of high-density project he expected to see in central Werribee.
“We have these same kind of developments in Sanctuary Lakes and Rose Grange,” he said.
“We are supposed to be encouraging more people to Werribee’s centre, and this is one of the last reasonable sized areas to put a high level of housing on.”
House lots in the development will range from 500 square metres to almost 3000.
Councillor Heather Marcus said the development was long overdue because the derelict site was now merely “a vandal’s haven”.
The project was approved seven-to-one.
