Thieves target GPS units

A SPIKE in thefts of Global Positioning System (GPS) units has renewed police calls for residents to be more vigilant about vehicle security.
Police have recorded a sharp rise in the number of thefts from vehicles in the City of Maribyrnong in the past months.
Acting Senior Sergeant Frank Fabbian said residents needed to better protect themselves from opportunistic thieves.
“The majority of theft from motor car offences are occurring during daylight hours, in and around major shopping centres and train stations in the Maribyrnong area and in public car parks,” he said.
Thefts include GPS, mobile phones, laptops and other valuables that appear to be easy targets for thieves.
Sen Sgt Fabbian said valuables should not be left unattended in vehicles, even for short periods of time.
“Don’t be tempted to leave items behind in your vehicle,” he said.
“Leaving items under seats or in the glove box is not advisable as thieves will and do still locate them.
“Do not make your car an easy target for a criminal.”
Police are also asking people to report any suspicious persons in or around these areas to police on 000.
