Free home safety checks for seniors

THE Department of Human Services is offering free home safety checks for Maribyrnong’s elderly residents.
Archicentre is offering the checks on behalf of the DHS to identify any hazards around the home, particularly those that could cause a fall.
Falls account for the majority of home injuries by Victorian elders.
“The safety of our seniors is a high priority for our community,” Maribyrnong Mayor Sarah Carter said.
“People visiting elderly relatives or friends should keep an eye out for safety issues, many of which are easy and simple to fix.”
David Hallett from Archicentre said a flat, accessible site was ideal for older residents, who gradually lose mobility or balance and risk injury while attempting to negotiate uneven paving or steps.
Other tips for safe-proofing the home include weather protection between the garage and house to reduce the risk of slipping; level-entry showers; grab rails in bathrooms; and impact-absorbent floor surfaces to help reduce potential falls.
Call Archicentre on 9815 1900 or 1300 136 513 to access the service.
