Cat caught in rabbit trap

A WERRIBEE man has been fined for laying an illegal rabbit trap which caught and seriously injured a cat, leading to the amputation of one of its paws.
The man appeared at the Werribee Magistrates Court late last year where he pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act after setting the serrated jaw trap in Riverside Avenue in July 2013.
No conviction was recorded against the man but he was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to pay $1000 to fund the cat’s medical costs.
Wyndham Mayor Bob Fairclough urged residents to make sure they comply with legal requirements before laying any animal traps.
“This is a disturbing case, but one which could have easily been prevented,” Cr Fairclough said.
“Fortunately, the injured cat has since recovered and found a new home and this incident serves as a timely warning about the dangers of animal traps.
“Aside from their intended victims, some animal traps have the potential to cause severe injuries to other animals and even humans. Significant penalties can apply for anybody found guilty of acts of deliberate or negligent animal cruelty including heavy fines and even imprisonment.
“If you’re planning to set an animal trap, you must check your legal requirements first; otherwise you will pay the price.”
