NATIVE birds and a bright background are the subjects of a new artwork which will transform one of Wyndham’s community centres.
The Central Park Community Centre has a new artwork in its courtyard as the result of collaboration between artist Fleur McArthur and participants in one of Wyndham’s Planned Activity Groups.
Ms McArthur hosted several workshops with program participants, which resulted in a sculpture featuring native birds on a bright background.
Wyndham Council’s Aged and Disability Department delivers 26 Planned Activity Groups that provide a social opportunity for older adults and people with a disability to connect with their local community in a safe and supportive environment while also providing a break for carers.
Mayor Heather Marcus said the work was a welcome addition.
“Not only has the artwork transformed the courtyard, creating a bright and visually appealing attraction, it is the vision of some of our planned activity group participants,” Cr Marcus said.
“Fleur has done a great job in bringing the thoughts and ideas of group members to life through this vibrant artwork. It is a great testament to how art can have positive impacts on our community and its residents.
“Wyndham City’s Planned Activity Groups, which operate out of Central Park Community Centre, cater for the needs of people who have dementia including a choir, a ‘Vintage Club’ and ‘Local Blokes’ programs for men, centre-based activity and exercise programs for older men and women along with an evening program for younger people who have a disability. We also offer the Lunch with the Bunch program, Meals on Wheels and a support group for those caring for the older people or people living with a disability.”
