Baby boom

WYNDHAM mums and dads have been given early Christmas presents with the arrival of 41 brand new bundles of joy at the Werribee Mercy Hospital last week.
This tops off a baby-booming year in Wyndham, with 2060 babies born at the Hospital since 1 January this year.
These new statistics come as the Department of Planning and Community Development released a new report stating that Melbourne is shifting towards a balance between the Eastern and Western suburbs as the West attracts a disproportionate share of population growth.
The Changing Shape of Melbourne, released by the DOPC this month, states that development in the east has become more constrained by barriers and predicts that six municipalities across the west, including Wyndham, will increase their share of Melbourne’s population from 16 per cent to 20 per cent by 2026.
Wyndham Mayor, John Menegazzo, said the City would welcome the growth rather than trying to restrict it.
“Wyndham City welcomes these tiny new residents and looks forward to providing Maternal and Child Health and Kindergarten for these new Wyndham families,” Cr Menegazzo said.
“Currently, Wyndham’s Strategic Planning department forecasts for growth and develops Precinct Structure Plans to provide for future communities.
“Based on these Plans, Wyndham then works closely with the State and Federal Government to attract as much funding for infrastructure and major projects as possible.”
The Mayor said the report by the DOPC was a welcome recognition of the growth coming to Wyndham.
“Reports such as this assist Wyndham City in highlighting the issues associated with growth, particularly in the areas of infrastructure provision, job creation and the delivery of social services,” he said.
“It is vital that all levels of Government work together to ensure adequate funds are made available to provide for vital infrastructure. Wyndham City is also keen to see the required planning underway to create more local jobs.”
Cr Menegazzo said that in the early months of his tenure as Mayor he would be meeting with other levels of government to campaign for Wyndham.
“In the coming months, Wyndham City will be meeting with relevant State Government Ministers to familiarise the new Government with issues affecting Wyndham.”
