Tower search

TELSTRA is again searching for a site in Taylors Hill on which to build a mobile phone tower.
Melton Shire Council rejected a plan to put a tower between Taylors Hill Blvd and Timele Dve two months ago.
A Telstra spokesperson said the company did not take the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal two months ago after the council opposed the plan.
Sugargum Ward councillor Justin Mammarella, who fought against the proposed 25mhigh telecommunications tower, said Telstra could look for a site but it was up to local residents to approve it.
“They can look wherever they want, just as long as they don’t pull out the same kind of strategy that they followed in the last one, where it was close to homes and parks,” he said.
Cr Mammarella said he was planning to send out letters this week to the residents who opposed the previous tower plan, to inform them about the victory of the tower not going ahead.
“I think that this is a true testament to what can be achieved when the community is united against such a disturbing and concerning proposal by a major corporation,” Cr Mammarella said.
“If they decide to put up a tower where it won’t be affecting any residents, then I don’t see any problems at all. It’s a question of how it affects the local people in the local community.”
Telstra’s spokesperson said the company is uncertain how long it would take to find an appropriate site.
“When we do that we’ll do the appropriate public consultation,” the spokesperson said.
