MARIBYRNONG City Council mayor Michelle MacDonald has followed through with a proposed notice of motion to investigate the stocking of alcohol in supermarket aisles.
Cr MacDonald called for a report to investigate the legality of the set-up, the health and social issues associated with it and any potential advocacy the council could take.
The mayor vowed to look into the issue at the end of last month when she found out the Coles Braybrook supermarket in Ashley St was selling alcohol in its aisles.
She called the move a “very cynical cash grab”.
Her fellow councillors supported the move, with Stony Creek Ward councillor Sel Sanli calling the set-up a slap in the face to locals.
Cr Sanli said young cashiers would be more likely to sell alcohol to minors because of peer pressure.
