WERRIBEE RSL Bowls Club collected its biggest scalp of the 2011 premier bowls season on Saturday on the back of some Brett Dodd brilliance.
The Bees defeated last year’s premier Clayton 16-80 to 2-68, leading for the majority of the day.
Dodd continued his good year on the green, winning his rink to help secure the Werribee lead.
“He (Dodd) is an absolutely sensational player and one of Victoria’s best,” committee member Rob Casey said.
“He is having a great year and I would think that he will probably win his third club championship as well, which would be great. He is the red hot favourite.”
Werribee was forced to battle more than just Clayton as Melbourne’s weather made it tough going for everyone out on the greens.
“It was pretty horrendous to play in. There was a lot of rain, wind and it wasn’t easy to play bowls. We got the upper hand right from the word go and we managed to carry it on right throughout the day.
“Werribee currently sit in sixth position on the ladder and are eying off a spot in the top four.
“I think we are a chance to play finals. There are so many even teams this year. Melbourne are the bench mark and they will be the side to beat and Moonee Ponds aren’t too far behind them,” Casey said.
“If we could get into the four it would be terrific. We probably just need a few of our younger guys to kick on and find a bit more depth in their bowls, that would help us a lot. When that happens we will be a very good team.”
Dane McKinnon was also one of the best players for Werribee, winning his rink by six shots.
“They are a quality team. They have lost a couple of players from last year’s team but they are a pretty good team so we are rapt with the result. It was a good day for us. ”
